Tip of the day: Transform Your Space

Tip of the day: Transform Your Space
Extra space is a big asset but knowing how to utilize it takes some thought and planning. A few small adjustments can go a long way. For example, transform a plain wall into a storage and display showcase just by adding open shelves or by creating a recessed niche. Adding a display shelf above the kitchen window can give the room an entirely new look and make room where the items used to be stored. Additionally, if you have the time and resources, invest in a room addition such as a sunroom, den or deck.

Florida Home Maintenance Tip – cleaning gutters

If you have a paint roller that’s too dirty to use anymore, use it to clean the gutters on your house. Using an extended handle, slide it along the gutter to remove the debris and leaves.

Home Improvement Tip From SWF Home Inspections – saving costs on custom tile installation

If there’s a custom tile that you love but your budget won’t allow you to cover the entire bathroom with it, use it as an accent tile and purchase lower-cost field tiles. You’ll save money and still get the look you want.

Home inspection tips: Testing for correct water pressure

To test for correct water pressure you can quickly attach a water-pressure test gauge to an outside sillcock or faucet, turn on the faucet and read the pounds per square inch you have in your home. Normal operating water pressure should be around 45 psi – 75 psi. Anything over 80 psi is considered too high by most building codes.

Heavy Mirror? Here’s a better way to hang it.

I have done this, and i bet you have too: The home inspections are done and you’re ready to start decorating your new Florida home. You work hard to hang a heavy picture or mirror  on the wall using several heavy-duty picture hooks. The picture is tough to align in just the right position because of its size and weight, complicated by the hanging wire and multiple hooks.

Then, during the night, you hear a crash. You jump out of bed to discover that the mirror has fallen. The floor has a big gouge, the frame is broken, and you’ve got lots of broken glass to pick up.

You can prevent this problem with a unique picture-and mirror – hanging bracket available at larger frame shops. This metal device comes in two parts. One bracket is attached across the back of the picture frame with a few screws. A matching bracket is screwed to the wall with long screws that reach the studs. Because the wall bracket is wider than 16 inches, it can easily be screwed into several wall studs.

Then you just hang the mirror by slipping the frame bracket over the wall bracket. It’s easy to level the frame and place it in the right location with just a few measurements when you first attach the bracket to the wall.
